The idea for this website was born in 2018 when the new Lüneburg Synagogue Memorial Site was opened.
There, at the historic site of the synagogue, large copper plaques commemorate the names of local Jewish families and victims of the Holocaust. Here, the aim is to complement and continue this memorial in a living, breathing way. The website tries to offer a transparent documentation of Lüneburg’s Jewish history, from the late 17th century to the 1950s. The digital space provides an open, contemporary and constantly expandable form of remembrance.
The website is a joint project of the Lüneburg Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation, the Lüneburg Museum and the Lüneburg History Workshop.
Users from all over the world can search for names, places and contexts, in German or in English. The database is based on decades of previous research, carried out with great dedication by many individuals and associations since the 1970s. For the purposes of the website, the existing documentations have been brought up to date. The database can and will be updated continuously.
"Jewish Life in Lüneburg" aims to offer quick and thorough information for everybody: private individuals with an interest in Jewish history, descendants of German-Jewish families, current inhabitants of Lüneburg, and also professional researchers.
